Study as Flashcards

This cheat sheet covers the six major themes used in AP French Language and Culture. Students need these themes to organize speaking, writing, listening, and reading tasks on the exam. It helps connect vocabulary, cultural examples, and personal opinions to the type of prompts used in class and on the AP test.

A strong theme-based approach makes essays, conversations, and cultural comparisons more focused.

Key Facts

  • The six AP French themes are Familles et communautés, Science et technologie, Beauté et esthétique, Vie contemporaine, Défis mondiaux, and Quête de soi.
  • For an argument, use a clear claim such as Je pense que, À mon avis, or Il est évident que followed by a specific reason.
  • To add evidence, use phrases such as Par exemple, Selon l'article, D'après le graphique, or Une étude montre que.
  • To compare cultures, use En France, Dans un pays francophone, Aux États-Unis, or Dans ma communauté to identify the cultural context.
  • To show similarity, use De même, Pareillement, Comme aux États-Unis, or Les deux cultures partagent.
  • To show contrast, use Cependant, En revanche, Contrairement à, or Tandis que to explain a meaningful difference.
  • A strong cultural comparison includes one French-speaking example, one personal or local example, and a clear explanation of why they are similar or different.
  • In formal writing and speaking, use the present tense for general truths, the passé composé or imparfait for past examples, and the futur simple for future effects.

Vocabulary

Thème
A broad topic area used to organize AP French tasks, such as science, identity, or global challenges.
Communauté
A group of people connected by location, culture, language, interests, or shared responsibilities.
Comparaison culturelle
An AP speaking task that asks students to compare an aspect of a French-speaking culture with their own culture.
Argument
A position supported by reasons, evidence, and examples.
Preuve
Information from a text, audio source, chart, observation, or cultural example that supports an idea.
Connecteur logique
A transition word or phrase that shows relationships between ideas, such as cause, contrast, addition, or conclusion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Listing the six themes without examples is weak because AP tasks require students to apply themes to real cultural situations.
  • Using only English-speaking cultural examples is wrong because the AP exam expects knowledge of at least one French-speaking community.
  • Translating phrases word for word from English can create unnatural French because expressions such as I am agree should be Je suis d'accord.
  • Making a comparison without explaining significance is incomplete because students must show why the similarity or difference matters.
  • Repeating basic transitions such as et and mais too often lowers sophistication because AP responses need varied connectors like cependant, en outre, and par conséquent.

Practice Questions

  1. 1 Name all 6 AP French themes in French, then write 1 example topic that fits each theme.
  2. 2 Write 4 French transition phrases: 1 for adding an idea, 1 for contrast, 1 for cause, and 1 for conclusion.
  3. 3 Create a 5-sentence cultural comparison about technology in schools, including 1 French-speaking example and 1 example from your own community.
  4. 4 Explain why a response about Vie contemporaine could also connect to Familles et communautés or Science et technologie.
