Sinhala is one of the main languages of Sri Lanka, and a few friendly phrases can make travel smoother and more respectful. Visitors can use simple Sinhala at markets, restaurants, tuk-tuk stands, and hotels. Even short phrases like thank you, how much, and where is show politeness and help start clear conversations.

Learning the script, romanization, and meaning together makes the phrases easier to recognize and remember.

Key Facts

  • How much is this? = මේක කීයද? = meka keeyada?
  • Where is it? = ඒක කොහෙද? = eka koheda?
  • I want this = මට මේක ඕනේ = mata meka one
  • The bill, please = කරුණාකර බිල දෙන්න = karunakara bila denna
  • Delicious = රසයි = rasai
  • Help, please = කරුණාකර උදව් කරන්න = karunakara udaw karanna

Vocabulary

ආයුබෝවන්, ayubowan
A polite Sinhala greeting used to say hello or welcome.
ස්තුතියි, stutiyi
The Sinhala word for thank you.
කීයද, keeyada
A question word used to ask how much something costs.
කොහෙද, koheda
A question word used to ask where something is.
ඕනේ, one
A word meaning want or need in everyday Sinhala.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Saying only the romanized phrase and ignoring the Sinhala script is limiting because signs, menus, and labels in Sri Lanka may use Sinhala letters.
  • Dropping polite words like කරුණාකර, karunakara is not always wrong, but it can sound too direct when asking a stranger for help or the bill.
  • Using මේක, meka for every object can be unclear because it means this, so point clearly or name the item when bargaining.
  • Confusing කීයද, keeyada with කොහෙද, koheda changes the question completely because one asks price and the other asks location.
