Spanish numbers from 1 to 100 are built from a small set of core words and clear patterns. Learning them helps you shop, tell time, give dates, read prices, and understand classroom instructions. The most important step is to memorize 1 to 15, then recognize how the tens and compound numbers are formed.

Once the patterns become familiar, counting in Spanish becomes much faster and more natural.

Key Facts

  • 1 to 10: uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez.
  • 11 to 15 are special forms: once, doce, trece, catorce, quince.
  • 16 to 19 use dieci + number: dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve.
  • 20 is veinte, and 21 to 29 usually combine into one word: veintiuno, veintidós, veintitrés.
  • 30 to 99 usually use tens + y + ones: 31 = treinta y uno, 48 = cuarenta y ocho, 76 = setenta y seis.
  • 100 is cien when it stands alone or before a noun: cien estudiantes means 100 students.

Vocabulary

Número
Número means number, a word or symbol used for counting or measuring.
Decena
Decena means ten or a group of ten, such as veinte, treinta, or cuarenta.
Unidad
Unidad means ones place, the final digit in numbers like 34, 58, or 92.
Y
Y means and, and it connects tens and ones in numbers from 31 to 99.
Acento
Acento means accent mark, which shows where the stress falls in words like dieciséis and veintidós.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Writing treinta uno instead of treinta y uno is wrong because numbers from 31 to 99 need y between the tens and ones.
  • Using uno before a masculine noun is wrong because uno usually changes to un, as in un libro.
  • Forgetting accent marks in dieciséis, veintidós, and veintitrés is wrong because accents show the correct stressed syllable.
  • Saying veinte y cinco for 25 is not the standard form because 21 to 29 are usually written as one word, such as veinticinco.
