Study as Flashcards

This cheat sheet covers common Spanish words and phrases used at school and in the classroom. Students need these words to name supplies, describe classroom objects, and understand everyday teacher directions. It also helps students speak in short, useful sentences instead of memorizing words by themselves.

The most important ideas are gender, number, articles, and polite classroom phrases. Many school words use el for masculine nouns and la for feminine nouns, such as el lápiz and la mesa. Students should also practice sentence frames like Necesito un lápiz and ¿Puedo ir al baño?

so they can use vocabulary in real classroom situations.

Key Facts

  • El means the for a masculine singular noun, as in el libro.
  • La means the for a feminine singular noun, as in la mochila.
  • Un means a or an for a masculine singular noun, as in un lápiz.
  • Una means a or an for a feminine singular noun, as in una regla.
  • To make many Spanish nouns plural, add -s if the word ends in a vowel, as in libro to libros.
  • To make many Spanish nouns plural, add -es if the word ends in a consonant, as in marcador to marcadores.
  • Necesito means I need, so Necesito un cuaderno means I need a notebook.
  • ¿Puedo...? means May I...?, so ¿Puedo ir al baño? means May I go to the bathroom?

Vocabulary

el lápiz
El lápiz means the pencil, and it is a masculine classroom supply noun.
la mochila
La mochila means the backpack, and it is a feminine classroom supply noun.
el cuaderno
El cuaderno means the notebook, which students use for writing class notes.
la maestra
La maestra means the female teacher, especially in an elementary classroom.
el estudiante
El estudiante means the student and can refer to a boy or a student in general.
el salón de clase
El salón de clase means the classroom, the place where students learn at school.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using el and la randomly is wrong because Spanish nouns have gender. Memorize each school word with its article, such as el lápiz or la mesa.
  • Forgetting accent marks changes the spelling and can make the word incorrect. Write lápiz with an accent on the a.
  • Using un with every noun is wrong because feminine nouns need una. Say una mochila, not un mochila.
  • Making every plural with only -s is wrong because words ending in consonants usually add -es. Say marcadores, not marcadors.
  • Translating word for word can sound unnatural in Spanish. Use the full phrase ¿Puedo ir al baño? instead of trying to translate May I to one separate word.

Practice Questions
