Italian numbers from 1 to 100 are useful for travel, shopping, dates, time, addresses, and classroom conversation. The first twenty numbers need the most memorization because many are unique words. After twenty, Italian numbers become more pattern based, so you can build larger numbers from tens and ones.

Learning the sound patterns helps you recognize numbers quickly when people speak at normal speed.

Italian combines tens and ones into one word, such as ventitré for 23 and quarantasei for 46. When uno or otto follows a ten, the final vowel of the ten usually drops, as in ventuno and ventotto. Accent marks matter in writing for some numbers ending in three, such as ventitré, trentatré, and novantatré.

With a few core patterns, you can count, spell, and pronounce every number from uno to cento.

Key Facts

  • 1 to 10: uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque, sei, sette, otto, nove, dieci.
  • 11 to 20: undici, dodici, tredici, quattordici, quindici, sedici, diciassette, diciotto, diciannove, venti.
  • Tens: 20 venti, 30 trenta, 40 quaranta, 50 cinquanta, 60 sessanta, 70 settanta, 80 ottanta, 90 novanta, 100 cento.
  • To form most numbers from 21 to 99, use tens + ones as one word, such as 34 = trentaquattro and 57 = cinquantasette.
  • Before uno and otto, drop the final vowel of the ten: 21 = ventuno, 28 = ventotto, 31 = trentuno, 48 = quarantotto.
  • Numbers ending in 3 above 20 take an accent on the final e: 23 = ventitré, 43 = quarantatré, 93 = novantatré.

Vocabulary

Numero
Numero means number in Italian.
Cento
Cento means one hundred and is used for the number 100.
Decina
Decina means a group of ten or the tens place in a number.
Unità
Unità means unit or ones place in a number.
Accento
Accento means accent mark, which can show stress in written Italian words such as ventitré.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Writing tens and ones as separate words, such as venti tre, is wrong because Italian usually combines them into one word: ventitré.
  • Forgetting to drop the vowel before uno or otto is wrong because 21 is ventuno, not ventiuno, and 28 is ventotto, not ventiotto.
  • Leaving off the accent in numbers ending in tre above 20 is wrong in careful writing because 33 should be trentatré.
  • Pronouncing Italian numbers like English words is wrong because Italian vowels are clearer and more consistent, so cinque, sette, and otto need Italian vowel sounds.

Practice Questions

  1. 1 Write these numbers in Italian: 24, 31, 68, 82, and 100.
  2. 2 Convert these Italian numbers into digits: diciassette, quarantotto, settantatré, novantuno, and cento.
  3. 3 Explain why 38 is trentotto but 37 is trentasette, using the vowel dropping rule.
