Study as Flashcards
Spanish question words help you ask for the most important missing information in a conversation. Four of the most useful are ¿Quién?, ¿Qué?, ¿Dónde?, and ¿Por qué?, which mean who, what, where, and why. They appear in everyday questions about people, objects, places, and reasons. Learning them early makes Spanish conversations clearer and more natural.
Key Facts
- ¿Quién? means who and is used to ask about a person, as in ¿Quién es ella? = Who is she?
- ¿Qué? means what and is used to ask about things, ideas, or actions, as in ¿Qué haces? = What are you doing?
- ¿Dónde? means where and is used to ask about location, as in ¿Dónde está la biblioteca? = Where is the library?
- ¿Por qué? means why and is used to ask for a reason, as in ¿Por qué estudias español? = Why do you study Spanish?
- Spanish questions use an upside-down question mark at the beginning and a regular question mark at the end: ¿...?
- Question words in Spanish have accent marks when they are used in direct or indirect questions: quién, qué, dónde, por qué.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting the accent marks on question words is wrong because quién, qué, dónde, and por qué need accents when they ask questions.
- Using qué for people is wrong when you mean who because questions about people usually need ¿Quién? or ¿Quiénes?.
- Writing por qué as one word in a question is wrong because ¿Por qué? means why, while porque means because.
- Leaving out the opening question mark is wrong in formal Spanish because a complete written question begins with ¿ and ends with ?.
