Interrogatives — Question Words cheat sheet - grade 6-8

Click image to open full size

Spanish interrogatives are question words such as qué, quién, cuándo, dónde, por qué, and cómo. Students need this cheat sheet because Spanish questions use accents and punctuation that are easy to forget. It helps learners choose the right word for asking about people, places, reasons, times, and amounts.

It also supports speaking, listening, reading, and writing in everyday classroom Spanish.

The most important rule is that Spanish question words usually carry an accent mark when they ask a question. Spanish also uses an opening question mark, ¿, at the beginning of a direct question and a closing question mark, ?, at the end. Many questions follow the pattern question word + verb + subject, such as ¿Dónde vive Ana?

Some question words change for number or gender, such as cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, and cuántas.

Key Facts

  • Qué means what or which and is used in questions such as ¿Qué estudias? meaning What do you study?
  • Quién means who for one person, and quiénes means who for more than one person.
  • Dónde means where, and adónde means to where when motion toward a place is involved.
  • Cuándo means when and asks about time, dates, or events, as in ¿Cuándo es la clase?
  • Por qué means why in a question, while porque means because in an answer.
  • Cómo means how or what in some expressions, such as ¿Cómo estás? and ¿Cómo te llamas?
  • Cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, and cuántas mean how much or how many and must match the noun in gender and number.
  • Direct Spanish questions begin with ¿ and end with ?, as in ¿Cuál es tu color favorito?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting the accent mark on question words is wrong because que and qué can have different jobs in a sentence.
  • Using porque instead of por qué in a question is wrong because por qué asks why, while porque answers with because.
  • Leaving out the opening question mark is wrong because direct Spanish questions must begin with ¿ and end with ?.
  • Using quién for more than one person is wrong because quiénes is the plural form for asking about multiple people.
  • Using cuánto without matching the noun is wrong because cuánto must change to cuánta, cuántos, or cuántas when the noun changes.
