Study Skills

SQ3R

Survey Question Read Recite Review

Helps you remember a method for studying a text.

Quick self-quiz

Tap each word to check what it stands for.

When to use it

Use it before reading a textbook chapter or long article to engage actively with the material instead of passively re-reading.

Example

For a chapter titled 'Cell Division,' you Survey the headings, Question ('What are the phases of mitosis?'), Read for answers, Recite the phases from memory, then Review by comparing your recall to the text.

Common mistake

Skipping Survey and going straight to reading. The Survey step primes your memory to absorb the details you encounter in the Read step.
