Follow the order
Eggs develop into larvae, then pupae, then adults.
Support egg, caterpillar, pupa and adult butterfly stages with suitable resources.
Grades 2–5 · Biology
Your goal
Support development until the caterpillar stage. Advance suitable observation steps.
Reduced motion is on. The controls still update the scene.
Egg. Provide a sheltered resting place before advancing.
Butterflies develop through egg, larva or caterpillar, pupa and adult. The pupa is an active transformation stage even though it does not feed. This teaching model pauses when a needed resource is missing and does not predict survival or real growth times. Real development also depends on species, temperature and other conditions.
Butterfly Life Cycle helps elementary students follow complete metamorphosis through egg, caterpillar, pupa and adult stages. Provide a sheltered resting place, suitable host plant leaves and adult nectar, then advance observation steps to see which resources support the current stage. Development pauses when a required resource is missing in this teaching model. Later goals continue through the pupa to an adult that can feed on nectar. The activity distinguishes caterpillar feeding from the nonfeeding pupa and explains that observation steps do not represent real days or survival forecasts.
Eggs develop into larvae, then pupae, then adults.
Supply suitable host plant leaves for the larval stage.
A pupa changes internally even though it does not feed.
Follow a valid butterfly life cycle and identify stage-specific resources. Ask students to predict what will happen, change one setting, and explain what they observe. Learn gives a starting point. Practice and Challenge offer new goals with the same scene.
Illustrative development steps with resource gating. Species, temperature, mortality and actual development times are not modeled.
