Coordinate Treasure Map

Your goal

Visit and collect the treasures in order (2, 1) then (5, 4). Read x across first and y up or down second.

Reduced motion is on. The controls still update the scene.

Your explorer is at (0, 0). 0 of 2 treasures collected. Next treasure 1 is at (2, 1). Read the horizontal x coordinate first.

The map uses equal horizontal and vertical unit lengths. Each ordered pair names an intersection, rather than a grid square. Treasure numbers set the route order. Challenge maps include all four quadrants.

Learn with Coordinate Treasure Map

Coordinate Treasure Map gives upper elementary students a route of numbered treasures described by ordered pairs. Learners move a blue explorer flag with separate horizontal and vertical coordinate controls, then collect the treasure at the current point. The map uses equal unit lengths and visibly labeled axes, helping children distinguish intersections from grid squares. Early routes stay in the first quadrant, while Challenge routes introduce negative coordinates. Students practice reading x before y and checking both values before collecting each treasure in the required order.

What to look for

Read x first

The first coordinate names the horizontal position.

Read y second

The second coordinate names the vertical position, increasing upward.

Follow the numbers

Collect each treasure before moving to the next point in the route.

For teachers and curious learners

Read horizontal and vertical coordinates in order and locate points on evenly scaled axes. Ask students to predict what will happen, change one setting, and explain what they observe. Learn gives a starting point. Practice and Challenge offer new goals with the same scene.

Treasures lie at integer grid intersections with equal horizontal and vertical unit lengths. Learn and Practice use nonnegative coordinates; Challenge includes negative coordinates in all four quadrants. Collection requires the correct position and route order.
