Understanding College Psychology Vocabulary

This vocabulary set gives you a connected map of how psychologists explain behavior and mental life. It begins with the nervous system. Neurons receive information through dendrites, send signals along axons, and pass chemical messages across synapses.

Neurotransmitters make this communication possible. These small processes matter because thoughts, emotions, movements, habits, and memories depend on activity across large networks of neurons.

The cerebral cortex supports complex abilities such as language, planning, perception, and voluntary action. Neuroplasticity explains why experience can reshape those networks over time.

Sleep and memory show how biology affects learning. Circadian rhythm helps organize cycles of alertness and sleep across roughly one day. Different sleep stages have different roles.

REM sleep is strongly linked with vivid dreaming and emotional processing. Slow-wave sleep is important for physical restoration and some forms of memory strengthening. Adenosine builds up during waking hours and contributes to sleep pressure.

Sleep consolidation describes the way new learning becomes more stable after sleep. When studying, connect this idea to real practice. Spacing study sessions across several days, then sleeping well, usually supports stronger recall than one long late-night session.

The memory terms describe a process rather than one storage box in the brain. Sensory memory holds incoming information very briefly. Working memory is the limited mental space used to hold and manipulate information right now.

Schemas organize knowledge, while assimilation and accommodation describe how schemas handle new information. The sympathetic nervous system and HPA axis prepare the body for threat, including cortisol release and the fight-or-flight response. The parasympathetic nervous system supports recovery.
