Understanding Psychology Vocabulary

Psychology vocabulary gives you a map of how people take in information, feel emotions, learn habits, remember events, and respond to stress. The terms come from several connected levels of explanation. Some describe the brain and nervous system.

Others describe thoughts, behavior, development, sleep, or social judgment. A useful goal is to connect these levels instead of treating each word as an isolated fact.

For example, a stressful event can involve brain structures that detect danger, body systems that release hormones, thoughts that interpret the event, and learned behaviors that follow. Psychology often studies the same experience from more than one level.

The biology terms explain how communication in the nervous system supports thought and action. Neurons form networks. Their receiving branches take in signals, while their sending fibers carry signals onward.

At the tiny spaces between cells, chemical messengers affect whether the next cell is more or less likely to send a signal. Large brain areas have broad jobs, but they work as networks rather than as separate boxes with one simple function. The cortex supports many complex skills.

The hippocampus is important for forming certain memories. The amygdala helps process emotionally important events.

The prefrontal cortex helps with planning and self control. Neuroplasticity matters because practice, experience, and injury can change connections in these networks over time.

Sleep and memory show this connection clearly. Circadian rhythm influences when your body tends to feel alert or sleepy. Sleep pressure builds partly through adenosine during waking hours.

Different sleep stages support different kinds of brain activity. REM sleep is often linked with vivid dreaming, while slow wave sleep is especially important for deep physical rest and memory processing. Memory is not one storage place.

Sensory memory briefly holds incoming information. Working memory holds a small amount while you solve a problem or follow instructions. Explicit memory includes facts and personal events you can report.

Implicit memory appears in skills and learned responses. Retrieval is the process of bringing stored information back, and it improves when you practice recalling rather than only rereading.

Learning terms explain how experiences shape future behavior. Classical conditioning involves learning that one event predicts another. Operant conditioning focuses on consequences that make behavior more or less likely.

Reinforcement strengthens a behavior, while punishment is intended to reduce it. Extinction occurs when a learned response weakens because the expected outcome no longer happens. Thinking is not always fully logical.

Heuristics are quick mental shortcuts that save effort, though they can lead to cognitive biases. Confirmation bias can make people notice evidence that fits existing beliefs. Availability and anchoring can distort judgments when memorable examples or first numbers have too much influence.
