Understanding Elementary Maps & Geography Skills Vocabulary

This vocabulary set teaches you to read maps as models of real places. A map is never the real world at full size. It selects important information and puts it into a smaller space.

Some terms focus on Sri Lanka. The Palk Strait, Central Highlands, Coastal Plain, Wet Zone, and provinces help you locate natural regions and human boundaries. These places show how land, water, rainfall, and government shape where people live.

Mountains in the Central Highlands affect river paths and rainfall. Low coastal land supports settlements, farming, fishing, ports, and travel. Learning place names matters most when you connect each name to its location and role.

Basic map tools help you make reliable observations. Start with the title, direction, legend, and scale. The legend tells you what map symbols mean, so a blue line may represent a river while a different line may show a road or border.

A compass rose gives directions. A bearing gives a more exact direction from one point to another. Scale helps you estimate real distance.

Trace a route with your finger, measure its map length, then use the scale to work out ground distance. Contour lines show the shape of land. Lines close together usually mean a steep slope.

Lines farther apart usually mean gentler land. Elevation tells how high land is above sea level.

Several words belong to travel and mapping on water or in the air. A trailhead marks the place where a land route begins. Nautical charts help boats travel safely.

They show coasts, water depth, hazards, and aids such as buoys. Sounding and sonar are ways to measure water depth. Bathymetry describes the shape of the land below water, much like contour maps describe land above water.

The continental shelf is the shallow underwater edge of a continent. Nautical miles are used for sea travel. Aeronautical charts, airspace, and VOR help pilots plan safe routes.

These map types prove that maps are made for a purpose. A hiking map, sea chart, and flight chart need different details.

The final group helps you read maps that display data about people or events. A choropleth map uses shades or colors for areas. Its class intervals group values into ranges.

A dot distribution map uses dots, with each dot standing for a dot value such as a number of people. Population density compares the number of people with the size of an area. A cartogram changes area size to show a data value, so distortion is expected.

Flow maps show movement from an origin to a destination. Isolines connect places with equal values. Contour lines are one kind of isoline, while isobars connect places with equal air pressure.

Study by sorting terms into place, map reading, navigation, landform, and data map groups. Then use real maps to explain one pattern in a full sentence, such as why a dense population pattern may appear near a coast or city.
