Grade 8 New York assessment subjects, selected New York standards practice and current state-test guidance.
Grade 8 normally has New York state English language arts (ELA) and mathematics assessments in the 2026–27 school year. ELA includes literary and informational reading, vocabulary in context, evidence and constructed responses. Mathematics includes grade-appropriate concepts and written reasoning.
Grade 8 also has a state science assessment following the NYS P-12 Science Learning Standards. Science questions use phenomena, models, investigations and data. Your school arranges the required classroom investigations.
New York's regular Grades 3–8 tests do not include a separate social studies assessment. High-school social studies has course-based Regents examinations.
Students taking accelerated high-school courses may have Regents testing assignments. Schools confirm individual assignments, exemptions, accessibility supports and any applicable replacement of grade-level tests.
New York distinguishes pre-test and post-test mathematics standards. A grade's spring test assesses eligible current-grade pre-test standards and eligible prior-grade post-test standards. Current-grade post-test topics in these banks are labeled supplemental curriculum practice; they are not presented as topics assessed on that grade's spring state test.
Independent, original skill practice with selected New York learning-standard connections. These shorter banks sample each tested subject and major content area, but not every assessed standard or official item format. They are not official state tests, Regents simulations, adaptive tests or score predictions.

A short question may practice only part of a standard. These selected connections are not a complete assessed-standard checklist. Use NYSED's current educator guides and standards for the full scope. Supplemental math topics are labeled where they fall after the current grade's spring test.

Current graduation requirements remain in effect for the 2026–27 school year. NYSED's September 2026 NY Inspires plan would move to one state diploma and end separate diploma assessment requirements for students graduating in January 2028 or later. Regulatory amendments are planned for the Board of Regents by February 2027. This does not end statewide assessment: Regents examinations continue, and NYSED is developing future high-school accountability assessments. Schools confirm each student's current testing and graduation requirements.
