New York Regents: Course Guide and Practice

Current Regents reading/writing, mathematics, science and social studies practice with New York standards and exam/graduation transition guidance.

What students take

Regents examinations are associated with high-school courses. Students may take some courses in middle school; these ten subjects are not ten tests assigned to one school grade or a requirement that every student take every exam.

  • English Language Arts
  • Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Algebra II
  • Life Science: Biology
  • Earth and Space Sciences
  • Physical Science: Chemistry
  • Physical Science: Physics
  • U.S. History and Government
  • Global History and Geography II

ELA uses reading, an argument supported by multiple sources, and text analysis. Mathematics follows the current Next Generation Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II standards. Social studies follows the New York Framework, with source analysis and original civic-literacy or enduring-issues practice. Science uses current course maps and investigation reasoning.

These science banks follow the current NYS P-12 Science Learning Standards. Life Science: Biology and Earth and Space Sciences exams began in June 2025; Physical Science: Chemistry and Physical Science: Physics began in June 2026. The retiring Physical Setting/Chemistry and Physical Setting/Physics exams remain scheduled through June 2027. Schools assign the version that matches the student's instruction and applicable rules. This online practice does not complete required school investigations or laboratory eligibility.

Start practicing

Independent, original skill practice with selected New York learning-standard connections. These shorter banks sample each tested subject and major content area, but not every assessed standard or official item format. They are not official state tests, Regents simulations, adaptive tests or score predictions.

Skills in these practice banks

A short question may practice only part of a standard. These selected connections are not a complete assessed-standard checklist. Use NYSED's current educator guides and standards for the full scope. Supplemental math topics are labeled where they fall after the current grade's spring test.

A useful practice routine

  1. Choose a skill and attempt a question before opening its hint. Read the explanation and try again.
  2. For reading and writing, cite details from the passage or sources. Explain how the evidence supports your interpretation or argument.
  3. For math and science, explain the reasoning, units, patterns and limits of a model or conclusion. For history, connect the source to its time, audience and context.
  4. Use the written checklist and example to revise. Drafts stay in the page's memory during practice; leaving or reloading clears them.
  5. Use official released questions and your school's computer-based practice to learn full exam formats and testing tools. Follow current calculator, reference-material and accessibility guidance.

Current requirements and NY Inspires

Current graduation requirements remain in effect for the 2026–27 school year. NYSED's September 2026 NY Inspires plan would move to one state diploma and end separate diploma assessment requirements for students graduating in January 2028 or later. Regulatory amendments are planned for the Board of Regents by February 2027. This does not end statewide assessment: Regents examinations continue, and NYSED is developing future high-school accountability assessments. Schools confirm each student's current testing and graduation requirements.
