Quick self-quiz

Tap each word to check what it stands for.

When to use it

Use it when subtracting a negative or positive integer, to convert the subtraction into an equivalent addition problem.

Example

8(3)8 - (-3) becomes 8+(+3)=118 + (+3) = 11. Keep 8, change the minus to plus, change 3-3 to +3+3.

Common mistake

Only changing one thing instead of both the operation and the sign of the second number. Both must change together.
