Elapsed Time Timeline

Your goal

Schedule the art session to finish at 9:00 and overlap the 8:20 to 9:10 reading session for 30 minutes.

The timeline uses five-minute scheduling steps. A session ending exactly when another starts has zero overlap. The clock crosses hour boundaries using sixty minutes per hour. Alternative schedules can satisfy the same finish and overlap requirements.

Learn with Elapsed Time Timeline

Elapsed Time Timeline lets elementary students arrange an art session alongside a fixed reading session. Children change the art start time and duration in five minute steps, then inspect its finish time and the shared section of the two timeline bars. Goals combine a required finish time with a specified number of overlapping minutes, encouraging students to reason about more than one relationship at once. Clock labels cross hour boundaries correctly. The purple overlap strip makes simultaneous time visible, including the case where sessions merely touch and share no minutes.

What to look for

Find the finish

Add duration to start time while remembering that an hour has sixty minutes.

Watch the overlap

Only the purple section shared by both sessions counts as simultaneous time.

Try another schedule

Some finish and overlap requirements allow more than one valid arrangement.

For teachers and curious learners

Connect start times, durations, finish times, and overlaps in minutes. Ask students to predict what will happen, change one setting, and explain what they observe. Learn gives a starting point. Practice and Challenge offer new goals with the same scene.
