Push from either side
A push has a direction. Two pushes can work together or oppose each other.
Push a cart from either side and watch how the combined forces change its motion.
Grades 3–5 · Physics
Your goal
Make the net push at least 2 N to the right, then advance at least 1 second.
Reduced motion is on. The controls still update the scene.
After 0.0 s, the cart is 0.0 m right of its start. Speed is 0.0 m/s neither direction. Net push is 0 N neither direction. Acceleration is 0.0 m/s² neither direction.
Step through up to 10 seconds. This model ignores friction and air resistance. Balanced pushes keep a moving cart moving at the same velocity. The ruler zooms out for long journeys.
Push & Pull Playground introduces balanced and unbalanced forces through a cart that students can control from either side. Change the opposing pushes, advance the motion, and compare the cart's position and speed. Equal opposite forces produce zero net force, while an unbalanced force changes the motion. Elementary learners can make predictions, test different force combinations, and discover why a moving object does not have to stop when its forces become balanced in this frictionless model.
A push has a direction. Two pushes can work together or oppose each other.
Equal opposite forces cancel. A moving cart can keep moving when its net force is zero.
Keep the mass and elapsed time the same when comparing the strength of a push.
Discover how balanced and unbalanced forces affect motion. Ask students to predict what will happen, change one setting, and explain what they observe. Learn gives a starting point. Practice and Challenge offer new goals with the same scene.
This model treats the cart as a point mass on a level track. It shows controlled forces and simplified motion; real wheels and surfaces add other effects.
