A Different Kind of Lantern Walk — Original Story
I wanted every detail to be my idea. Our class had made paper lanterns for a walk through the school garden, and I had drawn the route myself. When rain rattled against the windows, I stared at my map. The garden path was muddy, and our teacher said we could not hold the walk outside. I folded the map so tightly that its corners bent.
My friend Omar pointed inside the empty hallway. 'We could put the lanterns along the wall and make a display,' he said. I almost answered that a display was not a walk. Then I saw everyone holding a lantern they had worked hard to finish. 'That is a bright idea,' I said. Omar's suggestion solved our problem; we asked our teacher, who agreed to the indoor plan.
Omar arranged the lanterns while I made signs explaining their patterns. Other children added drawings of the garden we had hoped to visit. When we switched on the small lights, our lanterns glowed like a necklace of light around the display. Families stopped to look and ask questions. I unfolded my map and placed it beside the drawings. My plan had changed, but the evening belonged to all of us.
