Self-awareness means understanding your thoughts, feelings, strengths, needs, values, and choices. Personal identity means knowing the parts of yourself that help make you unique, including culture, interests, experiences, roles, and goals. Students need this cheat sheet to build confidence, make thoughtful decisions, and explain who they are with respect for themselves and others.

It also supports classroom reflection, journaling, goal setting, and calm problem solving.

  • A strength becomes more useful when you connect it to an action, such as My strength is ___, so I can use it to ___ .
  • Values guide choices, and a values check can use the prompt This choice matches my value of ___ because ___ .

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing identity with one label is a mistake because people are made of many traits, roles, interests, experiences, and goals.
  • Calling emotions good or bad is a mistake because every emotion gives information, even when the feeling is uncomfortable.
  • Ignoring body clues is a mistake because tight shoulders, fast breathing, or low energy can help you notice feelings before they become harder to manage.
  • Using I am statements as permanent judgments is a mistake because I am bad at math can be reframed as I am still building my math skills.
  • Copying someone else's values without reflection is a mistake because values should connect to what matters to you and how you want to act.
