Understanding Elementary Biology Vocabulary
This vocabulary set is about how living things get energy, grow, reproduce, move, and respond to their surroundings. Many words focus on plants because plants are living factories. They capture light, take in water and gases, make food, move materials, grow from seeds, then form new seeds.
Learning these words helps you follow a plant’s whole life story. It begins with a seed, continues through roots, stems, and leaves, then reaches flowers, fruits, and the next generation.
The terms are not separate facts. They describe connected jobs that keep an organism alive.
Photosynthesis is a central idea in this deck. Green leaves contain chlorophyll, which collects energy from light. Plants use that energy to make glucose.
Glucose gives a plant material for growth and stored energy for later. For this process, carbon dioxide enters through stomata, the tiny openings mostly found on leaves. Water travels upward from roots through xylem.
Some water leaves the plant as vapor through stomata. This links photosynthesis, transport, and evaporation.
A useful mental picture is a plant as a system of pathways. Roots collect water, xylem carries it, leaves use it, and stomata control gas movement.
Seeds show how a new plant begins. A seed coat protects the young plant inside. When conditions are right, germination starts.
The radicle usually appears first and becomes the root. The plumule grows upward and forms the early shoot. Cotyledons provide stored food or help the young plant begin making food.
Later, flowers support reproduction. Pollination moves pollen to the flower. Fertilization allows a seed to begin forming.
The ovule develops into a seed, while the ovary can develop into fruit. Pericarp is the fruit layer around seeds.
Nectar attracts animals such as insects. A proboscis helps some insects drink nectar, and a honey stomach lets bees carry nectar back to their colony.
Other terms show that biology includes movement and even useful microbes. Animals that walk, swim, or fly must push against air, water, or the ground. A walking animal repeats a stride.
A swimming or flying animal needs thrust to move forward. Flying animals need lift to stay up, while drag slows movement through air or water. Wings and webbed feet have shapes that help animals move efficiently.
A streamlined body reduces drag. Yeast is a tiny living fungus used in bread making. During fermentation, yeast uses sugar and releases carbon dioxide.
The gas forms bubbles in dough during proofing. Gluten helps trap those bubbles, so bread can rise.
