Understanding High School Psychology Vocabulary

This vocabulary set maps the main levels of psychology, from brain cells to everyday choices. Psychology studies behavior and mental processes, but those processes do not come from one single cause. A thought, feeling, or action can involve the nervous system, past learning, current surroundings, and social expectations.

The biology terms help explain how information moves through the brain. Neurons receive and send signals. Dendrites, axons, synapses, and neurotransmitters describe parts of that communication system.

The cerebral cortex and other brain areas describe larger systems with specialized jobs. Neuroplasticity connects the levels because experience can strengthen, weaken, or reorganize brain connections over time.

Sleep and stress show that the brain works with the whole body. Circadian rhythm helps set a daily pattern for alertness and sleep. Different sleep stages, including REM sleep and slow-wave sleep, support different forms of recovery and memory processing.

Adenosine helps explain why sleep pressure builds during the day. Sleep consolidation connects sleep to learning because recently practiced information can become more stable after rest. Stress terms show another body-brain system.

The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for rapid action. The parasympathetic nervous system supports calming and recovery.
