Quick self-quiz

Tap each word to check what it stands for.

When to use it

Use it in mineralogy when identifying an unknown mineral by scratch testing it against known Mohs reference minerals.

Example

If an unknown mineral scratches fluorite (4) but is scratched by apatite (5), its Mohs hardness is approximately 4.5.

Common mistake

Placing quartz at position 6 instead of 7. Orthoclase feldspar is 6 and quartz is 7, so quartz comes after orthoclase in the scale.
