When to use it
Use it when describing how white light splits through a prism or how a rainbow forms, to name the colors in wavelength order.
Example
Red light (~700 nm) has the longest wavelength and bends least in a prism; violet (~400 nm) has the shortest and bends most.
Common mistake
Reversing the order. ROY G BIV runs from longest wavelength (red) to shortest (violet), the same order as a rainbow from outer arc to inner arc.
