Question 1 of 28 · ELA.2.F.1.3
Florida Grade 2 FAST Reading Practice
Read original stories, poems and informational texts. Try questions with hints, then read aloud, retell and use new words with an adult.
These independently authored classroom questions support 13 Grade 2 B.E.S.T. reading, foundational and vocabulary benchmarks. This curriculum inventory is not an official Star item blueprint. Choice questions offer partial phonics support; an adult must hear actual decoding, fluency, retelling and vocabulary use. These questions are not an adaptive test, a full official test or a prediction of official scores. Completing this bank does not demonstrate full-year mastery.
Read the supplied text and choose one answer. When two texts appear, use both. Read poems line by line and notice spaces between stanzas. Use a hint if you need help; the explanations connect answers to evidence.
Ask for a hint when you need one. All levels use the same original questions.

Read, listen, speak and write together
Open the adult guidance for original scripts, printed words and observations. Keep listening scripts and expected responses hidden while the child listens to your voice. For phonics, show the written words on paper and hear the child read them. These are unscored adult observations, without a timer, certified fluency level or words-per-minute passing cutoff. Adult-led listening is classroom practice.
Reading with an adult
Unscored adult observations. Listen, speak, and practice together.
Read changing vowel teams and diphthongs
Read the words your adult writes. Try the vowel sound that makes a real word.
Activity 1 of 15
For the adult: instructions and observations
F.1.3a: Write food, book, bead, head, soup, cloud, coin, toy and cow on paper. Ask the child to read each aloud before modeling. Compare food/book: oo has the long /oo/ of food and the shorter vowel of book; bead/head: ea has long e or short e; soup/cloud: ou has /oo/ or the /ow/ diphthong. Hear the vowel diphthongs in coin (oi), toy (oy) and cow (ow). Mark only the vowel teams after the first try if support is needed. Add moon, foot, leaf, bread, loud, boil, joy and town for a fresh oral decoding try. Ask the child to read words, not just name the letters.
Materials: Paper and pencil
Expected response: Actually reads the printed words, varies oo/ea/ou sounds to fit food/book, bead/head and soup/cloud, and blends oi/oy/ow diphthongs into coin/toy/cow and fresh examples.
Benchmarks: ELA.2.F.1.3
Grade 2 FAST in 2026–27
FAST means Florida Assessment of Student Thinking. Grade 2 students must attempt Star Reading in all three progress-monitoring periods: PM1, PM2 and PM3. After two unsuccessful official Reading practice attempts, the district should administer Star Early Literacy for additional instructional information. Results on this site do not determine assessment placement.
Official K–2 FAST assessments require headphones, and Star Reading includes audio clips. A human oral-presentation accommodation applies to questions and response options; it is not a general permission to read passages aloud. Follow the school’s IEP or 504 guidance. This local practice uses an adult’s voice for classroom activities and does not recreate official audio delivery. See the 2026–27 K–2 FAST fact sheet and official resources below.
Grade 2 has no separate statewide B.E.S.T. Writing test or statewide Science test. Writing and science activities on this site are classroom learning.
