Order of Operations (BODMAS) Practice

Using brackets, orders, division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction in the correct order

Math - Grade 4-5

Instructions: Use BODMAS to solve each problem. Work in order: brackets, orders, division and multiplication from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. Show your work in the space provided.
  1. 1

    Calculate: 6 + 4 × 3

    Multiplication comes before addition.

    The answer is 18. First multiply 4 × 3 = 12, then add 6 + 12 = 18.
  2. 2

    Calculate: (6 + 4) × 3

    The answer is 30. First do the brackets: 6 + 4 = 10. Then multiply 10 × 3 = 30.
  3. 3

    Calculate: 20 - 12 ÷ 4

    Division comes before subtraction.

    The answer is 17. First divide 12 ÷ 4 = 3, then subtract 20 - 3 = 17.
  4. 4

    Calculate: 8 × 2 + 5

    The answer is 21. First multiply 8 × 2 = 16, then add 16 + 5 = 21.
  5. 5

    Calculate: 36 ÷ 6 + 7

Do the division before the addition.

    The answer is 13. First divide 36 ÷ 6 = 6, then add 6 + 7 = 13.
  6. 6

    Calculate: 5 + 3 × (10 - 6)

    The answer is 17. First do the brackets: 10 - 6 = 4. Then multiply 3 × 4 = 12. Finally add 5 + 12 = 17.
  7. 7

    Calculate: 4 × 3²

In BODMAS, orders such as squares are done before multiplication.

    The answer is 36. First work out the order: 3² = 9. Then multiply 4 × 9 = 36.
  8. 8

    Calculate: (18 + 6) ÷ 3

    The answer is 8. First do the brackets: 18 + 6 = 24. Then divide 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
  9. 9

    Calculate: 30 ÷ 5 × 2

For division and multiplication, solve from left to right.

The answer is 12. Division and multiplication have the same priority, so work from left to right: 30 ÷ 5 = 6, then 6 × 2 = 12.
  10. 10

    Calculate: 18 - 4 + 2

The answer is 16. Addition and subtraction have the same priority, so work from left to right: 18 - 4 = 14, then 14 + 2 = 16.
  11. 11

A pupil writes this number sentence on a board: 7 + 2 × 5. What is the correct answer using BODMAS, and why?

Do not simply work from left to right when multiplication is mixed with addition.

    The correct answer is 17. The multiplication is done first: 2 × 5 = 10. Then 7 + 10 = 17.
  12. 12

    Put brackets into this number sentence to make it equal 45: 5 + 4 × 9 = 45

Think about which part must be done first to make 9 × 9.

    The correct sentence is (5 + 4) × 9 = 45. The brackets make 5 + 4 happen first, giving 9 × 9 = 45.
