Understanding Elementary Geometry Vocabulary

Elementary geometry gives names to features that students can see and draw. It is about flat shapes, their edges, their corners, and the space they cover. The vocabulary in this deck helps students describe a shape clearly instead of saying that it looks pointy or wide.

A ray is useful for thinking about an angle because it starts at one point and extends in one direction. When two rays meet, their shared endpoint is the vertex. The size of the opening at that vertex is the angle.

It does not depend on how long the rays are drawn. Degrees measure the amount of turn from one ray to the other.

Angles help students notice important shape properties. A right angle is a square corner, like the corner of a sheet of paper. It measures ninety degrees and provides a helpful benchmark.

An acute angle has a smaller opening than a right angle. An obtuse angle has a larger opening. Students should compare openings visually before trying to name them.

They can use the corner of paper as a quick right angle test. This prevents a common mistake of judging an angle by the length of its sides. A long drawing can contain a small angle, while a short drawing can contain a large one.

Many of these ideas come together in polygons. A polygon is a closed flat shape made from straight line segments. Its sides form its boundary, which may also be called its rim.

Side length tells how long each edge is. Perimeter measures the full distance around that boundary. It is found by adding all side lengths in the same unit.

Perimeter is useful for problems about fencing a garden, placing trim around a picture, or walking around a playground. Rectilinear shapes are special polygons made with horizontal and vertical sides.

Their corners are right angles. Even if a rectilinear shape has an unusual outline, students can follow each outer edge carefully to find its perimeter.

Area is different from perimeter. Area describes the flat region inside a shape, not the distance around it. A unit square gives students a way to measure this region by covering it with equal square tiles.

One unit square covers one square unit of area. Students can find area by counting unit squares in rows, making sure there are no gaps or overlaps. For a rectangle, the number of squares in each row can be multiplied by the number of rows.

A more complex rectilinear shape can often be split into smaller rectangles, then their areas can be combined. To study these terms, draw shapes on grid paper and label the vertex, rays, sides, boundary, angles, perimeter, and area. Trace the outside edge for perimeter.
