Understanding Middle School Environmental Science Vocabulary
This vocabulary set covers how living things, land, water, air, and human actions affect one another. Environmental science is less about memorizing separate facts than noticing connected systems. A change in one part of a system can spread through many other parts.
For example, warmer water can stress a coral reef, affect the animals that depend on it, and change a local food web. The terms in this deck give names to these links. They help you explain not only what is happening in nature, but why it is happening and what may happen next.
Coral reef words show a clear chain of cause and effect. Coral polyps build reef structures, while zooxanthellae help provide energy to many corals. When conditions become stressful, corals can bleach.
This is not simply a color change. It can leave corals with much less energy. Ocean acidification connects the ocean to the atmosphere.

Link plastic waste to microplastics, then to organisms and food webs. Practice using each word in a short explanation of a real situation, such as a road dividing a forest or a reef exposed to warmer, more acidic water.
Pay close attention to words that describe a process, such as infiltration or succession, and words that describe a condition, such as endangered or fragmented. Good environmental science answers name the evidence, explain the connection, and describe the likely result.
