Addition is a way to put two groups together and find how many there are in all. For example, if you have 3 red counters and 2 blue counters, you can move them into one group and count them all. This helps young learners see that numbers can join to make a bigger number.

Addition is useful when we count toys, snacks, people, or objects in a classroom.

Understanding Early Learners: Addition as Putting Together

Young children learn addition best when they can touch, move, and see objects. Counters, cubes, buttons, toy animals, or blocks make the numbers real. Place each set in its own space first.

A child can notice that one set has a certain amount before anything moves. Then slide the objects together. Nothing has appeared or disappeared.

The objects are simply in one collection now. This idea is important because a total stays correct even when objects are spread out, lined up, or packed close together. A longer row does not always mean more objects.

Counting carefully is a major part of early addition. Each object needs one number word, spoken in order. The last number word said tells how many are in the whole collection.

Children often count one object twice when objects are moved quickly or overlap. They may skip an object when their finger does not touch each item.

Help by arranging objects in a line and moving each one aside after it is counted. Pointing, touching, and saying one number for each object builds a strong connection between number words and actual amounts.

After children can count every object, they can begin counting on. They keep one amount in their mind and say the next number words for the other amount. For example, a child who knows there are four blocks can hold up four fingers, then count on five, six, and seven as three more blocks are added.

This method is faster than starting at one every time. It works best when the child starts with the larger amount.

Children do not need to rush into this step. Counting all is a useful method while number knowledge is still growing.

Addition stories happen during ordinary routines. A child may put some crayons in a box, then add more crayons from a table. Two children may each bring books to a reading area.

A snack plate may receive pieces of fruit at different times. In each case, listen for the action of joining or adding more. Drawings can help children show the story.

They can draw one set, draw the next set, circle everything, then count. It is useful to talk about whether the order of the sets changes the result. Five apples joined with two apples gives the same total as two apples joined with five apples.

The groups can switch places because the same objects are being counted together. A group with none is worth noticing too. Adding none leaves the amount unchanged.
