Compare 24 and 42. Write >, <, or = between the numbers.
Look at the tens digits first.
24 < 42 because 2 tens is less than 4 tens. - 2
Circle the greater number: 36 or 31.
36 is greater than 31 because both numbers have 3 tens, and 6 ones is more than 1 one. - 3
Compare 58 and 58. Write >, <, or = between the numbers.
If both numbers are exactly the same, use the equal sign.
58 = 58 because both numbers have the same tens and the same ones. - 4
Which number is less: 17 or 71?
17 is less than 71 because 1 ten is less than 7 tens. - 5
A jar has 45 red beads. Another jar has 54 blue beads. Which jar has more beads?
Compare the tens digits in 45 and 54.
The jar with 54 blue beads has more beads because 54 is greater than 45. - 6
Compare 62 and 67. Write >, <, or = between the numbers.
62 < 67 because both numbers have 6 tens, and 2 ones is less than 7 ones. - 7
Circle the smaller number: 89 or 80.
When the tens digits match, compare the ones digits.
80 is smaller than 89 because both numbers have 8 tens, and 0 ones is less than 9 ones. - 8
There are 29 apples in one basket and 32 apples in another basket. Which basket has fewer apples?
The basket with 29 apples has fewer apples because 29 is less than 32. - 9
Compare 93 and 39. Write >, <, or = between the numbers.
The number with more tens is greater.
93 > 39 because 9 tens is greater than 3 tens. - 10
Write a number that is greater than 25 but less than 30.
One possible answer is 26 because 26 is greater than 25 and less than 30. - 11
Look at these base-ten blocks. Number A has 4 tens and 8 ones. Number B has 5 tens and 1 one. Which number is greater?
Build each number from its tens and ones.
Number B is greater because 51 is greater than 48. - 12
Compare 70 and 77. Write >, <, or = between the numbers.
70 < 77 because both numbers have 7 tens, and 0 ones is less than 7 ones. - 13
A class has 18 pencils in one box and 18 pencils in another box. Compare the two boxes using >, <, or =.
Equal means the amounts are the same.
18 = 18 because the two boxes have the same number of pencils. - 14
Which number is greater: 47 or 74?
74 is greater than 47 because 7 tens is more than 4 tens. - 15
Put these numbers in order from least to greatest: 56, 52, 59.
All three numbers have the same tens digit, so compare the ones digits.
The numbers in order from least to greatest are 52, 56, 59 because they all have 5 tens, and the ones digits go 2, 6, 9.
