Study as Flashcards

Spanish comparatives and superlatives help students compare people, things, actions, and qualities clearly. This cheat sheet covers the main patterns for saying more than, less than, as as, and the most or least. Students need these structures for descriptions, opinions, class discussions, writing, and everyday conversation.

The goal is to make each formula easy to recognize and use correctly.

Key Facts

  • To compare adjectives, use más + adjective + que for more than, as in Elena es más alta que Ana.
  • To compare adjectives, use menos + adjective + que for less than, as in Este libro es menos interesante que la película.
  • To compare equality with adjectives or adverbs, use tan + adjective/adverb + como, as in Mi hermano corre tan rápido como yo.
  • To compare equality with nouns, use tanto/tanta/tantos/tantas + noun + como, matching the noun in gender and number, as in Tengo tantos libros como tú.
  • To form the definite superlative, use el/la/los/las + noun + más/menos + adjective + de, as in Marta es la estudiante más organizada de la clase.
  • The irregular comparative mejor means better and peor means worse, as in Este examen es mejor que el anterior.
  • The irregular comparative mayor means older or greater and menor means younger or smaller, as in Mi hermana es menor que yo.
  • To express extremely with an adjective, add -ísimo/-ísima/-ísimos/-ísimas to the adjective stem, as in fácil becomes facilísimo.

Vocabulary

Comparativo
A form used to compare two people, things, actions, or qualities.
Superlativo
A form used to show that someone or something has the highest or lowest degree of a quality.
Igualdad
A comparison showing that two things are equal or the same in some way.
Desigualdad
A comparison showing that one thing is more or less than another.
Adjetivo
A word that describes a noun and usually agrees with it in gender and number in Spanish.
Concordancia
The agreement of words in gender and number, such as tanta tarea or tantos amigos.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using más bueno or más malo instead of mejor or peor is wrong in standard comparisons because Spanish uses irregular comparative forms for better and worse.
  • Forgetting que in más que or menos que makes the comparison incomplete because que introduces the second thing being compared.
  • Using tan with nouns is wrong because tan compares adjectives or adverbs, while tanto/tanta/tantos/tantas compares nouns.
  • Forgetting agreement with tanto is wrong because tanto must match the noun in gender and number, as in tantas preguntas or tantos estudiantes.
  • Using de instead of que in ordinary comparisons is wrong because más que compares two items, while más de is mainly used before numbers or quantities.

Practice Questions

  1. 1 Translate into Spanish: My class is more difficult than your class.
  2. 2 Choose the correct form: Tengo tan / tantos / tantas amigos como Carlos.
  3. 3 Write a Spanish sentence that means: This restaurant is the best in the city.
  4. 4 Explain why Mi hermana es más mayor que yo may sound awkward, and give a clearer way to say it.
