Understanding Elementary Environmental Science Vocabulary

This vocabulary set shows that environmental science is about connected Earth systems. The air above us affects living things below. The ozone layer in the stratosphere helps protect plants, animals, and people from ultraviolet radiation.

Scientists track ozone with Dobson units so they can notice long-term changes. CFC chemicals showed that human choices can harm a protective part of the atmosphere, even when the chemicals are released far from where ozone is found.

This is an important pattern in environmental science. A small change in one place can create effects across the planet.

Other words describe pollution moving through air and water. Burning fuels can release sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. These gases can react with moisture, then return to Earth through wet deposition such as rain or snow. pH helps scientists describe whether water or soil has become more acidic.

Acid rain can damage lakes, forests, buildings, and soil. Pollution does not always stay where it began. A persistent pollutant can remain for a long time.

It may build up inside one organism through bioaccumulation. It can become more concentrated at higher trophic levels through biomagnification. This is why a food web matters when scientists study pollution.

This can release methane and create a carbon feedback that increases warming. Oceans move heat through currents, including the global conveyor belt and thermohaline circulation. Upwelling brings deep water toward the surface.

Salinity affects these movements. El Niño and La Niña can shift weather patterns.
