A day has different parts, and each part can look and feel a little different. Morning, afternoon, evening, and night help us talk about when things happen. Learning these time words helps children follow routines, tell stories, and understand schedules.

The Sun, Moon, light, and darkness are helpful clues for knowing the time of day.

Key Facts

  • A full day has 24 hours.
  • Morning often begins when the Sun rises and people start the day.
  • Afternoon comes after lunch and before evening.
  • Evening is the time when the Sun gets lower and many families eat dinner.
  • Night is usually dark, and many people sleep.
  • Morning + Afternoon + Evening + Night = 1 full day.

Vocabulary

Morning
Morning is the early part of the day when many people wake up, eat breakfast, and get ready.
Afternoon
Afternoon is the part of the day after lunch and before evening.
Evening
Evening is the later part of the day when the Sun goes down and people often have dinner.
Night
Night is the dark part of the day when the Moon and stars may be seen and many people sleep.
Routine
A routine is a set of activities that happen in the same order again and again.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Calling every bright time morning is wrong because afternoon can also be sunny and bright. Look at the order of the day and activities, not just the light.
  • Putting night before evening is wrong because evening comes after afternoon and before night. Night is usually when it is darkest and bedtime happens.
  • Thinking the Moon only appears at night is not always correct because the Moon can sometimes be seen during the day. The Moon is a clue, but it is not the only clue.
  • Mixing up lunch and dinner is a common mistake because both are meals. Lunch usually happens in the afternoon, while dinner often happens in the evening.
