Colonial economies varied with geography and labor systems; European settlement also displaced Indigenous peoples. Independence led to debates about representative government and federal power. Expansion intensified conflicts over land and slavery. After the Civil War, Reconstruction amendments changed citizenship and voting protections, but discrimination persisted. Industrialization brought factories, migration, labor conflict and reform. In the twentieth century, the United States expanded its global influence, faced depression and world war, and competed with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Civil rights movements challenged unequal treatment. Since 1990, changing technology and global networks have created new economic opportunities and civic debates.
