Dovetail joints matter because their wedge shape resists pulling apart, making them useful for drawers, boxes, and cabinets. The jig holds the boards at a fixed position while a template guides the router bit along precise paths.

A shallow cut leaves the joint proud, meaning one board stands above the other. A cut that is too deep leaves a recessed joint. Both problems can be corrected by careful adjustment, but only after test cuts show what happened.

Use scrap that is the same thickness and wood type as the real project. Soft pine can compress around a tight joint, while hardwood may split before it closes. Cut a full sample corner, not just one small test section.

Assemble it by hand without glue. The parts should slide together with steady pressure from a mallet and a wood block. They should not need heavy blows.

A loose fit weakens the glue line and leaves visible gaps. An overly tight fit can crush the delicate edges of the joint.

Check whether the faces sit flush, whether the corner is square, and whether the joint closes fully at both ends. Make one adjustment at a time so the cause of each change stays clear.

Safe routing matters because the cutter removes material very quickly. Clamp the jig to a stable bench and make sure the workpieces are clamped tightly in the jig. Hold the router with both hands and allow it to reach full speed before entering the cut.

Move it smoothly along the template without forcing it. Forcing can cause burning, rough surfaces, or a sudden grab. Keep the power cord away from the cutter path.

Wear eye protection and hearing protection, since routers throw chips and produce sustained noise. Students learning this process should focus first on accurate marking, consistent board orientation, and patient test fitting.

Speed comes later. Good dovetail work is mostly careful setup followed by controlled, repeatable movement.
