A rectangle is 8 feet long and 5 feet wide. Find the area and the perimeter.
Area is length times width. Perimeter is the distance around the outside.
The area is 40 square feet because 8 × 5 = 40. The perimeter is 26 feet because 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26. - 2
A square garden has sides that are each 6 meters long. What is the area of the garden?
The area of the garden is 36 square meters because 6 × 6 = 36. - 3
A rectangular playground is 12 yards long and 7 yards wide. What is the perimeter of the playground?
Add all four side lengths.
The perimeter of the playground is 38 yards because 12 + 7 + 12 + 7 = 38. - 4
Find the missing side length of a rectangle with an area of 48 square inches and a width of 6 inches.
Use area ÷ known side length to find the missing side.
The missing side length is 8 inches because 48 ÷ 6 = 8. - 5
A rectangle is 9 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide. Which is larger, the area or the perimeter? Explain.
The area is 36 square centimeters because 9 × 4 = 36. The perimeter is 26 centimeters because 9 + 4 + 9 + 4 = 26. The number for the area is larger, but area and perimeter use different units. - 6
A farmer puts a fence around a square pen. Each side of the pen is 10 feet long. How many feet of fencing does the farmer need?
Fencing goes around the outside, so find the perimeter.
The farmer needs 40 feet of fencing because 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40. - 7
A rectangular rug has an area of 35 square feet. One side is 5 feet long. What is the length of the other side?
The other side is 7 feet long because 35 ÷ 5 = 7. - 8
On grid paper, a rectangle covers 3 rows with 8 squares in each row. What is the area of the rectangle?
Count equal rows by multiplying rows times squares in each row.
The area is 24 square units because 3 × 8 = 24. - 9
A bedroom floor is 11 feet long and 9 feet wide. How much carpet is needed to cover the floor?
The room needs 99 square feet of carpet because 11 × 9 = 99. - 10
A rectangle has side lengths of 14 inches, 6 inches, 14 inches, and 6 inches. Find its perimeter.
Perimeter means adding the lengths of all sides.
The perimeter is 40 inches because 14 + 6 + 14 + 6 = 40. - 11
A square has a perimeter of 32 centimeters. What is the length of one side?
One side is 8 centimeters long because a square has 4 equal sides and 32 ÷ 4 = 8. - 12
A rectangular picture frame is 15 inches long and 10 inches wide. Find the perimeter of the frame.
The frame goes around the edge of the rectangle.
The perimeter of the frame is 50 inches because 15 + 10 + 15 + 10 = 50. - 13
A simple L-shaped figure is made from two rectangles. Rectangle A is 6 units by 4 units. Rectangle B is 3 units by 4 units. What is the total area of the L-shaped figure?
Find the area of each rectangle, then add the two areas.
The total area is 36 square units because Rectangle A has an area of 24 square units and Rectangle B has an area of 12 square units. Together, 24 + 12 = 36. - 14
Maya says a rectangle with sides 2 inches and 12 inches has the same perimeter as a rectangle with sides 6 inches and 8 inches. Is Maya correct? Show your work.
Maya is correct. The first rectangle has a perimeter of 28 inches because 2 + 12 + 2 + 12 = 28. The second rectangle also has a perimeter of 28 inches because 6 + 8 + 6 + 8 = 28. - 15
A dog run is shaped like a rectangle that is 18 feet long and 6 feet wide. The owner wants to put grass inside and fencing around the outside. Find the area for grass and the perimeter for fencing.
Grass covers the inside area. Fencing goes around the outside perimeter.
The area for grass is 108 square feet because 18 × 6 = 108. The perimeter for fencing is 48 feet because 18 + 6 + 18 + 6 = 48.
