This cheat sheet covers essential HSK 1 Mandarin Chinese vocabulary for beginning learners. It helps students recognize common words, read pinyin, connect characters to meanings, and build simple sentences. A clean reference is useful for reviewing before quizzes, practicing pronunciation, and gaining confidence with everyday classroom Mandarin.

Key Facts

  • Use 你好 nǐ hǎo to say hello, and use 再见 zài jiàn to say goodbye.
  • Basic pronouns include 我 wǒ for I or me, 你 nǐ for you, and 他 tā for he or him.
  • To make a simple identity sentence, use Subject + 是 shì + noun, such as 我是学生 wǒ shì xuésheng, meaning I am a student.
  • To ask a yes or no question, place 吗 ma at the end of a statement, such as 你好吗 nǐ hǎo ma, meaning Are you well.
  • To make a negative sentence with many verbs, put 不 bù before the verb, such as 我不是老师 wǒ bú shì lǎoshī, meaning I am not a teacher.
  • Numbers 1 to 10 are 一 yī, 二 èr, 三 sān, 四 sì, 五 wǔ, 六 liù, 七 qī, 八 bā, 九 jiǔ, 十 shí.
  • The question word 什么 shénme means what, and it usually stays in the place where the answer would appear.
  • Use 的 de to show possession, such as 我的书 wǒ de shū, meaning my book.

Vocabulary

Characters
Chinese characters are the written symbols used to represent words or meaningful parts of words in Mandarin.
Pinyin
Pinyin is the Roman-letter spelling system that shows how Mandarin words are pronounced.
Tone
A tone is the pitch pattern of a Mandarin syllable, and changing the tone can change the meaning of a word.
HSK 1
HSK 1 is the first level of the Chinese Proficiency Test and focuses on basic vocabulary and simple sentence patterns.
Measure word
A measure word is a word used between a number or demonstrative and a noun, such as 个 gè in 一个学生 yí gè xuésheng.
Question particle
A question particle is a word added to a sentence to make a question, such as 吗 ma at the end of a yes or no question.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring tones, which is wrong because mā, má, mǎ, and mà can sound like different words to a Mandarin speaker.
  • Putting 吗 ma after a question word, which is wrong because 什么 shénme already makes the sentence a question.
  • Using 不 bù for every negative sentence, which is wrong because 没 méi is used with 有 yǒu to mean do not have or did not happen.
  • Forgetting the measure word 个 gè after numbers, which is wrong because Mandarin usually needs a measure word before a noun, as in 三个朋友 sān gè péngyou.
  • Translating English word order too directly, which is wrong because Mandarin question words usually stay where the answer belongs, as in 你叫什么名字 nǐ jiào shénme míngzi.

Practice Questions

  1. 1 Write the characters, pinyin, and English meaning for the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
  2. 2 Translate this sentence into English: 我有三个朋友 wǒ yǒu sān gè péngyou.
  3. 3 Turn this statement into a yes or no question: 你是学生 nǐ shì xuésheng.
  4. 4 Explain why 你叫什么名字 nǐ jiào shénme míngzi does not need 吗 ma at the end.
