Reference Guide

Airport and Hotel

Polite requests usually begin with Quisiera (I would like) or Necesito (I need). Questions about places almost always use the pattern ¿Dónde está...? (Where is...?).

  • Quisiera facturar mi vuelo. I would like to check in for my flight.
  • ¿Dónde está la puerta de embarque? Where is the boarding gate?
  • Quisiera una habitación. I would like a room.
  • ¿A qué hora es la salida? What time is check-out?

Directions and Transport

To get oriented, ask ¿Cómo llego a...? (How do I get to...?). Common replies use a la derecha (to the right), a la izquierda (to the left), and todo recto (straight ahead).

  • ¿Dónde está la estación? Where is the station?
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta un billete a Madrid? How much is a ticket to Madrid?
  • ¿Este autobús va al aeropuerto? Does this bus go to the airport?
  • Lléveme a esta dirección, por favor. Take me to this address, please.

Shopping and Money

The price question is ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?). To pay, use pagar con tarjeta (pay by card) or con efectivo (with cash). Clothing size is la talla.

  • ¿Cuánto cuesta? How much does it cost?
  • Solo estoy mirando, gracias. I am just looking, thank you.
  • ¿Tiene esto en una talla más grande? Do you have this in a larger size?
  • ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? Can I pay by card?

Emergencies

In an urgent moment, the fastest words are ¡Socorro! or ¡Ayuda! (Help!). Spanish uses an inverted ¿ before questions and an inverted ¡ before exclamations.

  • ¡Socorro! Help!
  • ¿Dónde está el hospital? Where is the hospital?
  • Necesito un médico. I need a doctor.
  • Llame a la policía, por favor. Please call the police.

Patterns Worth Memorizing

A few sentence frames cover most travel situations. Learn the frame, then swap in the place or item you need.

  • ¿Dónde está...? Where is...? Add any place: la estación, el hospital, el baño.
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta...? How much is...? Add any item or ticket.
  • ¿Puedo...? Can I...? Add an action: pagar con tarjeta, llevar esta maleta.
  • Quisiera... I would like... A polite way to request a room, a coffee, or a ticket.
  • Necesito... I need... Stronger than Quisiera, useful in emergencies.

Accents change meaning and pronunciation, so practice writing them. The typed mode in this lab includes an accent helper row (á é í ó ú ñ ü ¿ ¡) and gives gentle feedback when your only mistake is a missing accent.
