Heavy and Light

Comparing Weight

Weight tells us how heavy or light something is. Young learners compare objects by lifting them, holding them, or looking at a balance scale. This helps children describe the world with words like heavy, light, heavier, and lighter. It also builds early math and science skills through sorting and comparing.

A balance scale helps show which object weighs more. The heavier side goes down, and the lighter side goes up. Children can compare toys, books, fruit, or classroom objects to see the difference. Using real objects makes the idea of weight easy to see and understand.

Key Facts

  • Weight compares how heavy or light an object is.
  • A heavy object is harder to lift.
  • A light object is easier to lift.
  • On a balance scale, the heavier side goes down.
  • On a balance scale, the lighter side goes up.
  • You can compare two objects by holding or weighing them.

Vocabulary

weight
Weight tells how heavy or light something is.
heavy
Heavy means an object weighs more and is harder to lift.

balance scale
A balance scale is a tool that shows which object is heavier or lighter.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Thinking bigger always means heavier, because size and weight are not the same. A small rock can be heavier than a big balloon.
  • Looking only at how an object feels in your hand, because texture does not tell weight. A soft object can still be heavy.
  • Forgetting to compare the same number of objects, because one toy and three toys are not a fair match. Use one object on each side when starting.
  • Reading the balance scale backward, because the lower side is the heavier side. The side that goes up is lighter.

Practice Questions

  1. 1 A toy truck is heavy and a feather is light. Which one would make the balance scale go down?
  2. 2 Mia lifts an apple and a book. The book is harder to lift. Which object is heavier?
  3. 3 A big empty box and a small rock are on a table. Which one might be heavier, and how could you check?
