Context Clue Types
What are Context Clues?
Context clues are signals around an unfamiliar word that help a reader work out its meaning. Good readers use them all the time instead of stopping to look up every new word.
- Read the whole sentence. The meaning may appear before or after the word.
- Look at nearby words. A familiar word can often stand in for the new one.
- Use what you know. Real life experience fills in many gaps.
Synonym Clues
A synonym clue restates the unfamiliar word with a more familiar one nearby. Words like or, also, and that is often signal the restatement.
- Example. The hike was strenuous, or difficult and tiring.
- Look for a word in the same sentence that you do know.
- Two words placed next to each other often have similar meanings.
Antonym Clues
An antonym clue points to the opposite of the unfamiliar word. Signal words such as but, unlike, however, and while usually mark the contrast.
- Example. The path was perilous, but the one beside it was safe.
- Find the contrast word, then flip the meaning of the familiar half.
- The opposite meaning is almost always the right answer.
Definition Clues
A definition clue gives a direct meaning in the same sentence. Watch for phrases like which means, is defined as, or a definition set off by commas.
- Example. Photosynthesis, which is how plants make food from sunlight, takes place in leaves.
- These are the easiest clues once you spot the signal words.
- Punctuation often frames the definition. Look for commas, dashes, or parentheses.
Inference and Example Clues
Inference clues require the reader to use the whole situation, not just one matching word. Example clues list specific items that together hint at a category.
- Inference example. After missing the bus three days in a row, Owen finally became punctual.
- Example clue example. Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and limes are full of vitamin C.
- Ask what category fits all the listed items, or what meaning makes the whole story make sense.
