About the 6+1 Trait Writing Model
The Six Traits
The 6+1 Trait Writing model breaks writing quality into six measurable dimensions, each scored independently.
- Ideas and Content - the central message and supporting detail
- Organization - the internal structure and flow of ideas
- Voice and Style - the writer's personality and awareness of audience
- Word Choice - precision and richness of vocabulary
- Sentence Fluency - rhythm, variety, and readability
- Conventions - grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanics
The 4-Point Scale
Each trait is rated on a 1-4 scale. Scores combine for a total out of 24 points, mapping to four performance bands.
- 1 - Beginning: skill is emerging or absent
- 2 - Developing: skill is present but inconsistent
- 3 - Proficient: skill is applied reliably
- 4 - Exemplary: skill is sophisticated and consistent
A total score of 18 (all 3s) represents solid, on-grade writing across every trait.
Three Writing Types
The rubric adapts its descriptors to the purpose and demands of three core writing modes aligned with Common Core standards.
- Narrative - tells a story with character, setting, and plot. Voice and descriptive detail are central.
- Informational - explains or describes a topic using facts, definitions, and domain vocabulary.
- Argumentative - makes a claim and supports it with evidence, reasoning, and counterargument awareness.
