Clouds are fluffy shapes in the sky, but they are not made of cotton or smoke. They are made of many tiny drops of water floating in the air. Learning about clouds and rain helps children understand where puddles, plants, and drinking water can come from.

Understanding Early Learners: Clouds and Rain

The Sun is an important helper in rainy weather. It warms water in oceans, lakes, rivers, wet grass, and puddles. Some water then leaves the surface and mixes into the air as an invisible gas called water vapor.

This can happen even when a puddle seems to disappear without anyone touching it. On a warm day, wet clothes dry for the same reason.

The water has moved into the air. Air can hold some water vapor, but cooler air holds less than warmer air.

High in the sky, air is often cooler. As warm, moist air rises, it cools down. The water vapor then gathers around very tiny bits of dust, salt, or smoke in the air.

These tiny bits give the water a place to collect. This is why a cloud can form instead of the water simply staying invisible. A cloud may look soft and light, yet it contains a huge number of small drops.

Sometimes the air is cold enough for the water to freeze into tiny ice crystals. Different kinds of clouds can have drops, ice crystals, or both.

Clouds do not all bring the same weather. Thin, wispy clouds are often high up where the air is very cold. Low gray clouds can spread across much of the sky and may bring steady rain.

Tall clouds that grow upward can bring heavy rain, strong wind, thunder, and lightning. Children can begin to notice cloud shape, color, and movement. Dark clouds often look darker because they are thick and block more sunlight.

Wind pushes clouds across the sky, so their shapes can change quickly. Looking at clouds safely from the ground is a useful way to connect science with the weather outside.

Rain does more than make umbrellas necessary. It gives water to plants and helps seeds begin to grow. Some rain soaks into the ground, where it can reach plant roots or collect underground.

Some flows downhill into streams and rivers. After rain, puddles may slowly vanish as water returns to the air, beginning the cycle again. This movement of water from ground to air, from sky to ground, happens again and again.

When learning about it, pay attention to the change in water rather than thinking it has disappeared. It can be liquid in a puddle, invisible vapor in air, tiny drops in a cloud, or rain falling from the sky.
