A continents and oceans map is a great school project because it helps you see Earth as one connected planet. By drawing, cutting, coloring, and labeling a world map, you practice geography, observation, and organization. The finished poster can show where the seven continents and five oceans are located.

It also helps classmates quickly compare sizes, shapes, and positions around the world.

To make the map, start with a large poster board, a simple world map outline, colored paper or markers, scissors, glue, and labels. Place the continents first, then add ocean labels in the correct open-water areas around them. A compass rose, map key, title, and neat labels make the project easier to read.

This project teaches that maps are models of Earth, so they simplify the real planet while still showing important spatial relationships.

Key Facts

  • The seven continents are Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
  • The five oceans are the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, and Arctic Ocean.
  • Asia is the largest continent by land area.
  • The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth.
  • A map key explains what colors, symbols, or patterns mean on a map.
  • A compass rose shows directions: north, south, east, and west.

Vocabulary

Continent
A continent is one of Earth’s large main land areas.
Ocean
An ocean is a very large body of salt water that covers much of Earth’s surface.
Map key
A map key is a small guide that explains the colors, symbols, or patterns used on a map.
Compass rose
A compass rose is a symbol on a map that shows directions such as north, south, east, and west.
Label
A label is a word or phrase placed on a map to identify a place or feature.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Swapping the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans: this is wrong because the Atlantic is between the Americas and Europe and Africa, while the Pacific is on the other sides of the Americas and Asia and Australia.
  • Forgetting Antarctica at the bottom of the map: this leaves out one of the seven continents and makes the map incomplete.
  • Labeling Australia as an ocean: Australia is a continent, while the ocean near it is the Indian Ocean or Pacific Ocean depending on the side.
  • Making labels too small or crowded: this makes the map hard to read, so labels should be neat, clear, and placed where they do not cover important shapes.

Practice Questions

  1. 1 Your poster needs one label for each continent and one label for each ocean. How many total labels do you need for the seven continents and five oceans?
  2. 2 You have 12 colored pencils and want to use a different color for each of the 7 continents. How many colored pencils will be left after you choose the continent colors?
  3. 3 Explain why a map key and compass rose make a continents and oceans map easier for other students to understand.
