The most important ideas are simple rules students can remember and use. Light travels away from a source and can make shadows when something blocks it. Sound is made by vibrations and can be loud or soft, high or low.

Understanding Light Sound and Heat Energy Grade 2 Visual

Light does more than make objects visible. It can pass through some materials, such as clear glass and clean water. These materials are called transparent.

Light passes through partly transparent materials, such as wax paper, but the view looks blurry. These are translucent. Cardboard, wood, and a book block light.

They are opaque. This helps explain why curtains can make a room dim and why a window lets daylight into a classroom. Shadow shape and size can change.

A toy held close to a flashlight makes a larger shadow than the same toy held farther away. The direction of a shadow changes when the light source moves. Outside, this happens as the Sun appears to move across the sky.

Sound begins with a movement, but it needs something to travel through. Sound can travel through air, water, and solid objects. A student can feel this by gently placing fingers on their throat while humming.

The throat vibrates. A drum skin shakes when it is hit, then makes the nearby air shake. Those moving air particles carry the sound to the ear.

Inside the ear, tiny parts move and send messages to the brain. Materials can change sound.

Closing a door reduces sounds from another room because the door blocks some of the moving air. Soft carpets, curtains, and foam can absorb some sound, which is why a room with many soft surfaces may seem quieter.

Pitch and volume describe different parts of a sound. A small bell can make a high pitch even when it is not very loud. A large drum can make a low pitch without being painfully loud.

Students should listen for this difference when they hear birds, voices, musical instruments, alarms, and vehicles. Shorter or tighter strings often make higher sounds. Longer or looser strings often make lower sounds.

Sound levels matter for health. Very loud headphones, speakers, or machines can hurt hearing over time. Moving away from a loud sound, lowering the volume, or wearing ear protection in noisy places are sensible safety choices.

Heat can move in different ways. A metal spoon left in hot soup becomes warm because heat travels through the spoon. Metal is a good conductor of heat.

A wooden spoon stays cooler for longer because wood slows heat transfer. Materials that slow heat movement are called insulators. Mittens, oven gloves, coats, and insulated drink bottles use this idea.

A thermometer must be used carefully to get a fair reading. Its sensing end needs time to reach the temperature of the object or air being measured. Students should read the scale at eye level and avoid touching hot objects.

Temperature does not tell how much heat an object has overall. A large tub of warm water can contain more heat than a small cup at the same temperature. Careful observations, repeated tests, and safe handling help students separate what they see from what they assume.
