The Fraction Wall

A fraction wall is a visual chart where each row is divided into equal pieces. The top row shows 1 whole, and each row below splits into more pieces.

  • Row 1: 1 whole (one full bar)
  • Row 2: Halves (2 equal pieces)
  • Row 3: Thirds (3 equal pieces)
  • Rows continue through twelfths

Pieces that line up vertically are equivalent fractions.

Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions look different but represent the same amount. You can find them by multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same number.

12=24=36=48=510=612\frac{1}{2} = \frac{2}{4} = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{4}{8} = \frac{5}{10} = \frac{6}{12}

All of these fractions equal one half. Click any piece on the wall to see all its equivalents highlighted.

Comparing Fractions

To compare two fractions, look at how far each piece extends on the wall. The fraction that extends further is larger.

34>23\frac{3}{4} > \frac{2}{3}

You can also compare by finding a common denominator. With the fraction wall, you can see the comparison visually without any calculation.

Simplifying Fractions

Simplifying means writing a fraction in its smallest form. Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it.

48=4÷48÷4=12\frac{4}{8} = \frac{4 \div 4}{8 \div 4} = \frac{1}{2}

The GCD of 4 and 8 is 4. Dividing both by 4 gives the simplest form.
