Reference Guide

Unit Fractions

A unit fraction has 1 as the numerator. It represents one equal part of a whole.

12,13,14,15\frac{1}{2}, \quad \frac{1}{3}, \quad \frac{1}{4}, \quad \frac{1}{5}

When you divide a number line into equal parts, each part is one unit fraction. The denominator tells you how many parts the whole is split into.

Comparing Fractions

To compare fractions, place them on the same number line. The fraction farther to the right is greater.

34>23because 0.75>0.6\frac{3}{4} > \frac{2}{3} \quad \text{because } 0.75 > 0.\overline{6}

You can also cross-multiply to compare without finding decimals. If a × d > b × c, then a/b > c/d.

Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions name the same amount. They land on the exact same point on a number line.

12=24=36=48=510\frac{1}{2} = \frac{2}{4} = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{4}{8} = \frac{5}{10}

Multiply or divide both the numerator and denominator by the same number to find an equivalent fraction.

Mixed Numbers

When the numerator is larger than the denominator, the fraction is greater than 1. You can write it as a mixed number.

74=134113=323\frac{7}{4} = 1\frac{3}{4} \qquad \frac{11}{3} = 3\frac{2}{3}

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number part and the remainder is the new numerator.
