Reference Guide

US Coins

  • Penny = 1¢
  • Nickel = 5¢
  • Dime = 10¢
  • Quarter = 25¢

5 pennies = 1 nickel. 2 nickels = 1 dime. 5 nickels = 1 quarter. 4 quarters = 1 dollar.

Counting Mixed Money

Start with the largest denomination and count down. Count the dollars first, then quarters, then dimes, nickels, and pennies.

Write the total using the dollar sign and decimal point. For example, 2 quarters and 3 pennies is $0.53.

Making Change

Subtract the price from what you paid. Use the fewest coins possible. Start with the largest coin that fits.

If you pay $5.00 for a $3.47 item, your change is $1.53. That is 1 dollar bill, 2 quarters, and 3 pennies.

Comparing Prices

To find "how much more", subtract the smaller price from the larger. Line up the decimal points when comparing.

If an apple costs $1.25 and a banana costs $0.89, the apple costs $0.36 more. ($1.25 − $0.89 = $0.36)
