What is a Habitat?

A habitat is the natural home of an animal or plant. It provides everything a living thing needs to survive.

  • Food to eat and grow
  • Water to drink
  • Shelter for safety from weather and predators
  • Space to find mates and raise young

Different habitats have different climates, plants, and amounts of water. Deserts are hot and dry while forests are warm and wet.

What are Adaptations?

Adaptations are special features that help an animal survive in its habitat. They develop over many, many generations.

  • Body parts like thick fur, webbed feet, or sharp claws
  • Behaviors like hibernating, migrating, or hunting at night
  • Coloring like camouflage that helps an animal hide

A polar bear's white fur keeps it warm and hidden in snow. A camel's humps store fat for energy in the desert.

Matching Animals to Habitats

Each animal is adapted to its habitat's climate, food sources, and dangers. Look for clues in their body features.

  • Thick fur or blubber means a cold habitat
  • Fins and streamlined bodies mean water
  • Long legs and camouflage mean open spaces
  • Moist skin and webbed feet mean wetlands

Some animals live in more than one habitat. A fox can survive in forests, grasslands, and even the arctic.

What Happens When Habitats Change?

When conditions in a habitat change, animals face three choices.

  • Adapt slowly over many generations to the new conditions
  • Move to a new area that still suits their needs
  • Decline if they cannot adapt or move fast enough

Habitat loss from deforestation, pollution, or climate change is the biggest threat to wildlife today. Protecting habitats helps all the animals that depend on them.
