Reference Guide
How Unit Conversion Works
To convert between units, multiply by the ratio of the two conversion factors. Each unit has a factor relative to a base unit in its category.
Temperature is Different
Temperature conversions require both multiplication and addition, unlike most other units. The formulas between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin each involve an offset.
Metric vs Imperial
The metric system (SI) is based on powers of 10. The imperial system uses historical units like feet, pounds, and gallons. Most of the world uses metric, while the US commonly uses imperial.
Data Units
Data uses binary prefixes where 1 KB = 1024 bytes (not 1000). This pattern continues through MB, GB, and TB, each being 1024 times the previous unit.
