Quadrilateral Family Tree
All quadrilaterals have 4 sides. The family tree shows how special types are related.
- Trapezoid has at least 1 pair of parallel sides
- Parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides
- Rectangle is a parallelogram with 4 right angles
- Rhombus is a parallelogram with 4 equal sides
- Square is both a rectangle and a rhombus
Every square is a rectangle, a rhombus, a parallelogram, and a trapezoid!
Parallel Sides
Parallel lines run in the same direction and never cross, like train tracks.
- A trapezoid has exactly 1 pair of parallel sides
- A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides
- A regular hexagon has 3 pairs of parallel sides
- Triangles, kites, and pentagons have no parallel sides
In this tool, parallel sides are shown with colored dashed lines and arrow marks. Each pair gets its own color.
Right Angles
A right angle measures exactly 90 degrees, like the corner of a book or a door frame. It is marked with a small square.
- Squares and rectangles have 4 right angles
- A right triangle has 1 right angle
- Rhombuses and parallelograms usually do not have right angles
Lines of Symmetry
A line of symmetry divides a shape into two matching halves. If you fold along that line, both sides match up perfectly.
- A square has 4 lines of symmetry
- An equilateral triangle has 3
- A rectangle and rhombus each have 2
- A kite and isosceles triangle each have 1
- A circle has infinitely many
